July 2007 - BEWARE PUGGLE FRAUDSTERS! A Puggle fan has been in touch as they were scammed by some fake Puggle breeders. Money was paid but no pups ever existed. The police have been told, but these fraudsters may still be at large, so BEWARE! Please get in touch if you are concerned and want more info about this.

March 2007 - Puggles featured in the Independent! This is Maggie from Stow Maries, Essex, who appeared in the Independent during Crufts week as part of a big article on cross breeding. Thanks to Lisa for letting us have the pics from the professional photographer.

Did you know the Queen currently owns four Corgis called Pharos, Swift, Emma and Linnet; three 'Dorgis' (Corgis crossed with a Dachshund) called Brandy, Cider and Berry and five Cocker Spaniels called Bisto, Oxo, Flash, Spick and Span? (Kennel Club UK) Well, if crosses are good enough for the Queen of England.......!

Celebrities spotted with puggles include James Gandolfini of “The Sopranos” fame and Jake Gyllenhgaal, star of “Brokeback Mountain”. Guys, we trust you to look after your puggles for longer than Paris Hilton allegedly looked after her Teacup Chihuahua “Tinkerbelle”, who it is rumoured currently lives with Paris’ Mum, after getting too heavy for Paris to carry…..

“The Kennel Club … is pro-Puggle, and doesn’t share breeders’ concerns. Spokesperson Phil Buckley says that the interest in the Puggle is “good for dogs in general”. Stressing that the Kennel Club exists for all dogs – not just purebreds – he says that anything that encourages dog ownership is to be welcomed. “The Puggle is a cute little dog,” Phil says, though he has concerns that people are being charged £500-600 for such a crossbreed.”

Info

The puggle is a new, very popular hybrid. In case you hadn’t already guessed from the name, they are a planned cross between a Beagle (the bitch) and a Pug (the dog).

Because puggles are so new, there is not a standard breed specification. Many puggle litters vary in size and characteristics, although the following are fairly typical:

General Appearance

A small, energetic dog with a thickset body, deep forehead wrinkles, short legs, a curled tail and droopy ears. The short, smooth coat can be fawn, tan, white and black, or a mixture. They usually have a black mask.

Size

An adult puggle weighs 14-25 lbs, and will be about 13-15 inches tall at the shoulder.

Character & Temperament

Puggles are generally energetic, sweet tempered, playful, intelligent, loving and sociable. They should be friendly to children, other dogs, and any household pets.

Exercise

Puggles are energetic dogs, which love to play, and enjoy walks and exercise. However, they also love relaxing in a warm lap, and cuddling with their owners.

Coat & Grooming

The short, smooth coat does moult, but not excessively. Being smaller dogs, the amount of hair shed is not significant compared with larger breeds. Puggles are fairly low-maintenance breed, requiring only an occasional bath, together with nail clipping and ear cleaning.

Training

Puggles are fairly easy to train, and like other toy dogs, can be taught to use a litter tray if necessary. They love to please their owners.

As puggles become more common, it is hoped that breed standards can be agreed. This would be essential to obtain Kennel Club registration. For other important information about the development of the puggle breed, please see the Ethical Puggle Breeding section.
